To Whom It May Concern:

After spending this whole semester writing a paper that to me it seemed like it would never end, I have learned to improve my writing and research skills in a way I never taught I would.  I began my research online; however I soon got discouraged since I couldn’t find any relative information to my topic.  I got so discouraged that the taught of changing my topic seemed as the only solution possible.  However, I didn’t and it was all thanks to my professor that I stuck with it, he gave me a new perspective on how to look at my research in a new light.  My research wasn’t easy, I was the first researcher to put out information about the topic so I had to dig deeper in order to find enough information to accomplish my research.  After gathering some very old documents that didn’t really talk about my topic but rather on how it began I began to expand my research by looking at web sites and digging information about the present and the future of my topic.  I found telephone numbers of people that could be of a great help and I called them to ask if I could interview them.  Sadly I couldn’t interview anyone over the phone however they were nice enough to give me their e-mail address and tell me to write to them anything that I needed to know.  Despite the fact that an interview over an email is not the same as talking in person or over the phone, it was the only thing I could get so I decided to take as much advantage from it as I could. I began to understand that this was a very competitive field; the people who I was trying to interview were terribly busy planning a fashion show so much that most of them didn’t even respond to my e-mails.

When I first started to write my essay, I believe the most difficult part was the confusion I had on how to organize my paper.  I was petrified that I would some how do it wrong and my professor’s expectations wouldn’t live up to what my paper was.  On my first peer review (see pages attached 4-8) I was surprised to get such a good feed back, this encouraged me to keep on going.  My peer review partner gave me the security that I need to start thrusting my work more.  After my peer review partner gave me back my paper with both words of encouragement and helpful hints to improve my paper, I knew I had to follow her suggestions and make the changed she suggested.  Even though she was my peer, I took her opinions very seriously because after all she was my reader and the most important thing in my paper to me was, to keep my reader interesting in learning more about my topic.

Pages 10-16 are what came to be known as my final paper.  I feel very critical about my paper still, and I do not believe there is a certain point in which my paper shows my best ability as a writer.  However, I think that it shows my improvement as a writer.  Before I came to this class, writing was what I dreaded the most about college, I was in all honesty an awful writer.  Now finishing my paper I know that I have improved, it has been all thanks to my professor and my peers, who gave me feed back and helped me when I seemed to struggle the most. I developed skills that I considerer valuable for my future, such as developing annotated bibliography, knowing how to write in the correct APA format, but most importantly I learned to read documents and gather the main and most important information out of them.  I specifically used the skill of reading document in pages  11-13 which reflect the part of my paper called the literature review.

Finally I want to write about the formatting on my paper, which is APA.  I believe there are great samples of my ability to paraphrase on pages 11-13.  I decided to show the reader that I understood the information and that is why I decided not to quote anything on my paper, instead everything was paraphrased, I wanted the reader to hear my own voice.  This project was a huge learning experience for me, I came out with more knowledge that I ever taught possible.

SECTION 2

Part 1: What is Research Writing? What does it mean to be a research writer? How are research questions developed?

The article above talks about research writing in the way that people perceive to be.  Not everyone find research writing to be their cup of tea, however the article in a sense doesn’t make it seem so bad.  The link above talks about research papers as more than just papers full of different sources of information, but rather papers that analyze a given topic.  The article goes even further to discuss the different types of research papers: Analytical and Argument of a point.  For both types it gives a brief description of how both of them should be done and what each of them entails

In my opinion research writing is having a question about something and answering by doing research about the topic.  In some cases however, research writing could also be a form of trying to prove a point by researching it evidence that proves that specific point.  A research writer is someone who looks deeper about a topic than most people would in order to find new information to either prove a point or to answer a given question.  However I deeply believe that research writers have to be extremely interested in the subject they are researching. If for some reason they are not interested in the subject, the writing would be dull and it might also lack content.  I believe that research questions are developed by looking into what motivates the writer, what inspires the writer, or something as simple as what is the writer curious about knowing more about.

My goal on this research class is to develop a research paper that both displays my personality and what I am interested in along with completely explaining my findings as a researcher.  I think that the way to achieve my goal would be to leave behind my bad habits of procrastinating. My approach is simply going to be to start researching as much as I can early on in order to get a head start and find out more about my topic.  As far as what my interests are, there are many, I just to choose something that other can also find interesting that way others can also learn from my research.

Part 2: Genres of Research Writing

The genres of research writing are Analytical and Argumentative. I think that the explanation of both on this document is very informative.  Analytical is basically when the writer doesn’t know anything about the subject and he/she displays all of the findings without taking any sides about the subject.  Argumentative in the other hand, is when the writer does know about the subject and chooses to take a side on it. The writer then researches the subject to show the reader his/her point of view.  In both however the research has to be extensive, facts have to be given about the writers findings in order to have a good research paper.

I have already chosen my research topic to be about Colombia.  I have chosen this topic because it is very personal, I was worn there and I also lived there until I was twelve years old.  Other than the fact that this is a very personal topic for me, I also choose it because I feel that the information that most people seem to know about Colombia is always negative.  Throughout my research I hope to show the reality of what Colombia is today, including everything bad about it but also everything good that the country has to offer.

Argumentative would be the genre that I will be using for my research paper.  I know a lot about the subject to know that I want to writer my research about the pros rather than the cons of Colombia.  Knowing a lot about my topic doesn’t mean that my research would be simple by any means.  The more and more that I research about it, all I seem to find are the negative parts of it.  I am sure it is going to be challenging to show my point of view and that is why I can not wait to really start my research.  Not only am I am excited about my topic but I am also a little scared to see everyone’s reaction after it is done, I anxious to see if through my research I can change my readers views about Colombia.

Part 3: Reading Critically & Evaluating Sources

Critical Reading Towards Critical Writing

Part 4: Understanding Formatting (MLA/APA/CMS)

APA Style Essentials:

  1. Document:  Font should be 12 point in Times New Roman.  Margins have to be an inch all around the page. The line spacing should be doubled, and for spacing after punctuation should be once after everything except a period which in that case should be twice.  The numeration of the pages should be on the top right corner of each page.  At the left side of the pages should be a running head which is a short title. The document should be in a passive voice format and the pages should be in the following order:  Title Page, Abstract, Body, References, Footnotes, Tables, Figures, Appendixes.
  2. Title Page: Should contain Paper title, author(s), institutional affiliation(s), author note.
  3. Abstract: Should be numbered as page number two, and it should have a summary of what the paper is all about.
  4. Body:  Is the introduction of the paper which is followed by the whole paper.
  5. Citations should be done properly according to the source. Ex: Journal, book or internet.
  6. Quotations should always include the author, year, and page number.
  7. References: Everything should be cited

Part 5: Creating a proposal and outline for a research paper

Link to research Proposal: http://www.ehow.com/how_2002069_write-research-proposal.html

The research proposal can be the most important thing in writing a research paper. The steps to accomplish a good research proposal are as follows:

  1. Attention crabbing title.
  2. 300 words+ research question+ why you are doing this research+ ways in which you will accomplish your research + some predictions about the outcome of the research = Abstract.
  3. Intro
  4. Resource Review, to show the knowledge on what you have learned about the topic.
  5. Explain how you apply the methods you have learned and how they help your research.
  6. Predict the outcome of your research.
  7. Explain in which ways your research would help, or affect the reader.

Research Outline link:http://depts.washington.edu/psywc/handouts/pdf/outline.pdf

There are two types of outlines: The topic outline and the sentence outline.  Outlines are basically a great way to organize your ideas about your paper. To make an outline there are some basic steps to follow:

  1. Identify the topic
  2. Main Categories
  3. Create the first Category
  4. Create subtract Categories

It is very important to know that each category should be at least two entries.

Part 9: Peer Review and Feedback

I have learned a lot from doing my peer review project. Things that I would never think that I could learn from editing another’s paper actually helped my own.  I feel that by them making mistakes I can learn from those mistakes with out having to make them myself. The feedback that Dani gave me was very helpful towards my paper, I learned to expand more on topics and explain more what I am talking about.  I was glad I got to this activity I founded very helpful in the development of my paper.

SECTION 3:

Proposal

Colombia is commonly associated with headlines such as: Drug dealers, cocaine wars, child killed by land mine, guerrilla kidnaps governor, paramilitares kill farmers, and that is  just to name a few.  But can anyone believe that in the mist of all this madness there is a world of fashion?  A world so wonderful and magical that inspires designers to create couture designs in order to show them off at their very own Colombian Fashion Week.  Colombian fashion has developed tremendously in the past few decades.   Colombia has gone from having very generic clothing to having couture designs from designers well known around the fashion industry such as Hernan Zajar and Silvia Tcherassi.  The fashion world is world of fantasy in which designers dreams come true and they show them off to the world with the best models they can find to fit the designs that have brought their imagination to life.  I love fashion, and I am amazed by its rapid growth around the world.  However its growth is not limited to Milan, New York, or Paris.  Its growth goes far more than what anyone can image, to countries that in other days we would though as dangerous 3rd world countries.  I am so passionate about my research because I want to show that Colombia despites its many awfulness, it has become a very developed fashion industry.

In order to complete my research I will use books, journals, and the web.  In addition to these I will try to conduct an interview over the phone of fashion designer in Colombia.  So far in the sources I have found, I have learned that Colombia is not only producing new designs but they are also manufacturing textiles. I have also learned that in the past 50 years Colombia’s fashion industry has grown tremendously.

What I hope to accomplish with my research is simple, I want to show that fashion is everywhere even in the least expected places.  After my research is completed I hope to have a better understanding about the fashion industry in Colombia, and about its development into what it is today. With my research I want to show my readers that Colombia is much more than what the media makes it out to be, and that we have many talented designers that sometimes they get overshadowed by the bad reputation that Colombia has.

  1. Fashion Industry of Colombia
  1. What role does Medellin play in Colombia’s fashion
  1. Fashion Week

First Draft:

Intro

“Colombia has become one of the main fashion centers in Latin America, featuring trade shows such as Colombiatex and Colombiamoda, which bring together companies from several countries to display the advantages, quality, design and major developments of the fashion industry.” Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce (2008).  Not many would think that Colombia, a third world country, a country seen to the eyes of the world as a country full of illegal drugs and guerrilla, would be a country that has evolved into having a world full of couture, designers, and high end fashion shows.  This research is going to focus on showing what Colombian fashion is today, and where it has evolved from. In this project, I will show Colombian fashion trough my eyes; I will compare the different focuses of designers, of fashion shows, and textiles that Colombia has today.

Colombia has grown from being only a supplier of textile, to now being recognized as having both a strong textiles industry and an apparel industry. (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2007)  Colombian fashion started with huge textile companies that over the years have contributed to what now is a very lucrative fashion industry. Colombian fashion now has four fashion weeks a year.  Two of these fashion shows are held in Medellin they are called Colombiatex, and Colombiamoda.  Bogota’s fashion week is called Expomoda, and finally Cali’s fashion week is called Exposhow. In addition to having a year full of fashion weeks, Colombia also has great designers that have represented Colombia in not only South American fashion shows but also in New York City’s fashion week, Prague, Miami and Milan. Designers such as Esteban Cortazar, Hernan Zajar, and Silvia Tscherassi are some of the biggest names in Colombian fashion. Throughout the rest of paper I will show their collections, collections that have made these designers famous all around the world.

The Colombian fashion industry is an industry that has been growing over the past one hundred years, and today it generates more than 600.000 jobs nation wide. (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2008) The fashion industry is an industry that is growing very fast not only in Colombia but world wide. Colombia’s economy however, it is slowly becoming more stable allowing consumers to becoming interested in buying couture designs.  I have also noticed that outside countries have had a major influence in Colombians development.

Lil review

Colombian fashion has barely any research done about it; however, the information I have found is very interesting and explanatory about the industry. There were two articles in particular that I found very interesting.  They are both a little out of date, one is written in 2007 and the other one in 2008, yet they both contain information that I consider very valuable for my research.

Both articles are written by Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce.  The article from 2008 explains how both the textile and apparel industries in Colombia have grown over the years. The article mentions Colombiamoda, which is one of the biggest fashion weeks of Colombia. According to Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce Colombiamoda generated $72 million dollars worth of business opportunities in their 2007 show. Furthermore $23.178 million we done deals during the event. Not only has Colombiamoda generated some serious business for Colombia’s economy but it has also brought more than a thousand buyers from out side countries to view the newest Colombian trends. All through the article the city of Medellin is always mentioned, this is due to the big influence that Medellin has in the industry of Colombian fashion. “Medellin has traditionally dominated the textile market with the largest textile mills and garment manufacturers for distribution throughout Colombia, and sizeable export quantities to Vene-zuela, Ecuador, Central America, the Caribbean, Western Europe, and the USA.” (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2008)  Medellin accounts today for 53% of Colombian textile production and 35% of the apparel production. (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2008).

The article written in 2007 although it contains much of the same information, it also contains some new information about the fashion industry of Colombia.  “Colombia is recognized internationally as a country which possesses great

strengths in the textile and apparel businesses and, specifically, in the fashion

industry.” (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2007) It is great to see that Colombia is recognized for their fashion since to be completely honest I had never heard about it outside of Colombia. Since the textile industry was the one who let the way into what the fashion industry is today in Colombia, it is also mentioned in this article.  The article describes the textile industry as being both sophisticated and mature and as having five integrated mills that generate the majority of the textiles in Colombia.  (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2007)  Colombia has an excellent geographical location which allows both exports and imports to any part of the world. Because of the imports that Colombia has been receiving in the past couple of years the local apparel companies have had to cut down on the items they offer. (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2007)

****more sources to come****

Methodology

Since the information I have right now is some what out of date, and the perception of the photographs is all mine, I want to have in my research other people’s points of view.  What I plan to do is to interview at least two designers from Colombia that can give their insight about the industry currently.  After this, I will like to have the outsiders prospective on the development of the fashion industry over the years and how they see the fashion industry today.  For this, I will interview members of my family, and perhaps friends to get a better understanding on what they see Colombian fashion to be.

Final Draft:

Colombian Fashion: Its development into what it is today

Not many would think that Colombia, a third world country, a country seen to the eyes of the world as a country full of illegal drugs and guerrilla, would be a country that has evolved into having a world full of couture designers, and high end fashion shows. My research is going to focus on showing what Colombian fashion is today, and where it has developed. In this project, I will show Colombian fashion trough my eyes; I show different Colombian designers that have become very successful, I also explore the fashion shows held in Colombia, and finally how the textile company has made the fashion industry in Colombia into the reality that it is today.

The Colombian fashion industry is an industry that has been growing over the past one hundred years, and today it generates more than 600.000 jobs nation wide. (Swiss Colombian Chamber of Commerce, 2007)

Since articles about Colombian Fashion are limited, I will have to find my information else where.  I plan to look at the websites of Colombiamoda, Exposhow, and Expomoda in other to gather more information about the shows.  I think that it would also be interesting to be able to talk to a representative from each of the shows in order to get an insight to what goes on behind the scenes.  Added to this I will try to interview maybe one or two Colombian designers in order to have their thoughts about how the Colombian fashion industry has grown over the years.  My plan in order to collect the data is to call them and hope for them to give a little bit of their time to answer my questions.

I will also want to explore four main designers work through photographs of their designs.  Since this research is my own perception of what Colombian fashion is, I thought that giving my thoughts about their designs was very appropriate.  The designers I will like study are Olga Piedrahíta, Hernan Zajar, Silvia Tcherassi, and Esteban Cortazar.  Why these designers? Well after asking around in my family, and friends who live in Colombia they came up with a couple of names that they hear the most on T.V. However I didn’t wanted to go only by their perception, so I did a little research about them my self, and found out that in fact they are very interesting designers.  Nevertheless, I do not want to give the wrongful perception that these are the only important, or well known designers that Colombia has. I simply chose a few of the best in order to show through their designs what Colombia fashion is today.

After having the idea of this project, I knew that the best way to illustrate it would be through a narrated multi-media video.  In this video, my biggest goal is to show Colombian designs, I want to make my audience feel as if they were in an actual Colombian fashion show.  However, at the same time through my narration I would like to educate and pass on my knowledge and my experiences that I have gather while doing my research.  I hope my video to more than just a simple video; I want to give the viewers a sense of what I see Colombian fashion to be.

After doing my research, I have found that talking to the fashion industry is a very hard task to achieve.  However, even though I couldn’t talk to many of them for more than five minutes which was enough time for them to give me their e-mail address.  I did e-mail them and I only have a few responses, as for the others I have kept on e-mailing them hoping for a soon response.  A woman called Sandra for the Cali Exposhow mention that anything that I needed to know would be in their web page.  So seeing the lack of responses, which in part I understand, as I know that these are very busy people, I took a more in-depth look at their website.  I found many answers to the questions that I had, however, I have a few miner ones still in the air.

As far as my designers go, I couldn’t get in touch with any well known designers as I was hoping to.  But I did get in touch with a designer called Sandra Tenorio, who may not be very recognized but she has been around in the industry for a long time. I learned a lot about her she game an insight that only a designer could.

Over the past few months I have learned far more about Colombian fashion that I ever though possible.  The fashion industry in Colombia is rapidly growing so much that in the past Exposhow held in Cali, there big designer names featuring their collections, one of them is Oscar De La Renta which here in the U.S he is very recognized and admired by many. Oscar De La Renta presence in Colombia only goes to show that Colombia’s fashion industry is growing and been heard all over the world.

SECTION 5:

MIDTER LETTER

Dear Marlen:

I have enjoyed being in this class and learning a new way of writing.  However I must admit that I am feeling overwhelmed right now.  I have procrastinated and now I don’t even know where to begin anymore.   It’s all my fault that I feel so overwhelmed right now however I am sure you expected to hear this, so now I am going to tell you what I think what your class.  I never had a class like this before; it feels so laid back and comfortable that I sometimes I even forget where I am.  I think that your method of teaching is very unique and effective, I love how you let us think outside of the box, “the box” of what is politically correct to write about in a college research class.  I never though I would be hearing the topics that we have in my college class, I simply though that we would write about the most boring topics and find it terribly tedious to get the work done.

I have several concerns; I haven’t jet felt in love with my topic.  I know we changed it because it relates to me even more but I felt that I already had everything planed for the other one and now I have to start all over.  I am however excited to learn about Colombian fashion and I think it is a good idea, it just that right now I feel like with this class I would get a break from all the fashion that I have to see in all of my other classes.  Another one of my concerns are my sources, I have found more than I expected however after reading them I don’t see them relating to my topic, so pretty much I am freaking out because I feel like I even look under the rocks and haven’t found anything else.  My actual paper is another concern, I feel like I don’t want to disappoint myself or you or my classmates, I am scared of not being a good writer and of not getting my research point through my writing.

Okay so I have told you about my concerns, and  my procrastination. With that being said I am glad I toke your class, yes it is full of work, but I find that you are a very unique professor and that if I wouldn’t have taken your class I would of have missed out on a lot.

Abstract:

Most perceptions of fashion are foundations of the typical origins of where fashion was born.  Milan, Paris, and New York are just some of the places that came to mind when thinking about fashion. However through my research I showed a new side of fashion that may not be perceived by many, a fashion industry hidden behind the bad reputation of a third world country.  I explored Colombia’s fashion industry.  I, a 22 year old college student that researched a field no other researcher has ever done before.  This research showed the Colombia fashion industry to the eyes of a simple college student that knows that fashion goes beyond expectations.

What is the fashion industry in Colombia

Colombia’s fashion industry evolved over many years from their textile industry.  Colombia was for a very long time the main textile provider to all of South America.  Exports of Colombian textiles where also made to the U.S and Europe, and even today there are many Colombian textile exports.  The textile industry in Colombia led the way for the country to have the fashion industry that it has today.  Currently Colombia more than 4 fashion weeks a year, 3 of them which are help at the biggest cities including Bogota, the capital.  This fashion weeks have let the way for Colombian designers to show their amazing designs, designs that are bought by more than 100 business buyers that attend the shows every year. However in the recent years Colombia has gone above and beyond and it has even invited internationally known designers to participate in their fashion weeks, most recently Oscar De La Renta who just participated in the fashion week help in Cali this past February.  Not only has Colombia grown in this industry but their designers have too, names such as Hernan Jazar and Silvia Tcherassi are just some of the Colombian designers who have shown their collections at international fashion weeks such as the ones in New York and Milan.

Methodology:

  • Interviewed (over email) a fashion designer from Colombia that has been in the field for more than 10 years.
  • 6 individuals from 3 of the most important fashion weeks of Colombia were asked to participate (Only 1 actually participated).

Findings:

Despite my lack of information on primary research my findings are greater than what I ever thought possible.  I found a country that has grown tremendously in an industry that has just started to develop over the past 15 years.  Colombia’s fashion industry has let the way for this country to be seen as more than just a simple third world country, it has let the way for even Colombia’s economy to grow in to what it is today.  Designer dresses, fashion shows, internationally known designers, and couture were things that became a dream come true for many Colombians have once dreamed of having the fashion industry like the one they have today.
